Norwegian Wood

Brewed by: HaandBryggeriet Norway
Type : Smoked Beer
Alc: 6.50% ABV

Notes: Brewed with smoked malt, munich malt, crystal and chocolate malt, and spiced with juniper twigs and berries.

Today I’m reviewing Norwegian Wood from HaandBryggeriet. This is a traditional ale brewed with, amongst others, smoked malts and juniper berries.
The beer is an interpretation of the beer that Norwegian farms were required to brew by law back in the day.

The bottle I’m having today is still quite fresh, being batch #488, brewed on the 20th of June earlier this year.

Looks

Dark rusty brown/red with a big head. The head has good retention but does not leave much lacing on the glass.

Aroma

The aroma has burnt wood, hops and some malty sweetness. There are also some herbal notes present.

Flavor

The flavor is as expected after smelling the beer, but also has some fruity hints that I did not pick up from the aroma. The flavor is quite sweet, but with a nice touch of bitterness to back it up.

The mouth feel is medium and the carbonation is a tad bit sharp.

Finish

Very long slightly bitter finish with hints of smoked meat, burnt wood and dark fruits.
